In this HIS we prepared a history, undertook a site inspection, and made an assessment of cultural significance of the LEP listed cottage at No. 16 Douglas Street.

Much of the Crown land in the Coogee, Randwick and Waverley area was sold in the 1850s.  The subject property is representative of this as it was purchased at a land sale in August 1857 by the architect Oswald Hoddle Lewis. Lewis subsequently conveyed the land to his brother who sold it a few more times before it was subdivided. The property was purchased from an estate sale in 1887 by Francis Vincent Boland, a labourer. Boland had the weatherboard cottage on the property built as a family residence, probably in 1888.
