Prior to European settlement Hunters Hill was occupied by the Aboriginal people of the Walumeda tribe. Hunters Hill was settled by Europeans during the late 1700s and is often described as Australia’s oldest suburb.
1 Augustine street was built by immigrant stonemason, John Andrea Cuneo, in the 1880's. Cuneo and his family were prominent businesspeople who contributed to the cultural heritage of Hunters Hill, and their legacy is evident in many buildings around town, including the Garibaldi Hotel (now used as offices) which John constructed.
