Our Place: Surry Hills, Darlinghurst & Paddington Interviews

Our Place - Paddington - George Tourvas b. 1957

George was born in 1957 and grew up on the border of Paddington and Darlinghurst. He can remember living at Five Ways and then on the corner of Lawson Street and Neild Avenue. His parents owned a corner shop.In those days, the early sixties, it was a lot different to what it is now. It was a lot more family orientated, a lot more ethnic groups, there was a lot of Greeks, a lot of Portuguese, Italians, but a lot of families, and basically they were working class people. His memories date from the mid 1960s and present a lively account of the period.

Caveat: This video was shot on a Sony Hi 8 video recorder. It was not until 2010 that we could get the analogue tapes digitised. Despite careful storage in the intervening period there has been some deterioration in quality. While we have retained the original .mov files from the original digitization in the SRA Archive, by necessity uploaded here are .mp4 files. The video is raw and unedited, a primary source document recording the occassion.
